I love Memphis, Tennessee. It is the place I will always call home. I lived and taught school there for 16 years and they were the best years of my life. I met my husband there. I ate one million meals there. It is my favorite food in the world. Below I've composed a list of my favorite places to eat. In the attached pages called Midtown Memphis, Downtown Memphis and East Memphis you will find descriptions and pictures of places you must visit!
Flight - for a birthday or anniversary or any reason. The idea is trios of delicious drinks, appetizers, salads, main courses and desserts. The bubbles flight is great - sparkling wine!
Central BBQ - for the pulled pork nachos with hot BBQ sauce instead of regular. This is my favorite Memphis BBQ.
Corky's BBQ - for the bbq chicken and the best banana pudding in the world. I love the 50's atmosphere in this place. I have fond memories of going there with my parents.
India Palace - the non-vegetarian meal is the best deal at night if you don't go for the buffet (which is probably the best in town)
Golden India - Their bhindi masala (okra) is the best I've ever had.
Mayuri - for the buffet on Friday and Saturday night, the dosas and sambar with rice. And onion pakoras dipped in carrot pickle, mint chutney, or raita. I have more than once thought to myself as I am first in line for the lunch buffet, "This food is real. This is proof that God loves us."
The Melting Pot - because fondue is so much fun. My favorite course is the cheese course. Sadly, the Melting Pot no longer exists in Memphis.
Ryu Sushi on Summer Ave - the cowboy roll has fried chicken in it. The shrimp fried rice is my favorite ever.
El Porton at Poplar and Highland - for the chicken nachos with a side of pico de gallo and pickled jalapeños. The margaritas taste slightly medicinal but with added lime juice they're perfect. I ate frequently in that restaurant for 20 years.
Los Compadres at Holmes and Poplar - for Cuban food. The steak churrasco with grilled onions, plantains and white rice
Bhan Thai - for the thom kha soup with shrimp and the massaman curry chicken with red chili sauce on the side. These dishes will always be my measuring reference for other American Thai food.
Cafe Ole in Cooper-Young - the menu has changed over the years but the margaritas are delicious and strong, the new crazy corn is delicious
Shweinhaus - because it tastes like grandmother food and because I love all German food. Order the sampler plate and pick out delicious sausages. The potato cakes are heavenly dipped in the spicy apple sauce. The waiters and waitresses dress in German clothing.
Westy's - for the rice dishes and sandwiches and tater tots and hot fudge pie. Everything is delicious on this menu.
